LAS VEGAS — Unbeaten Abner Mares of Mexico halted countryman Daniel Ponce De Leon with a ninth-round technical knockout to win the WBC featherweight championship Saturday night and capture his third world title in three weight classes.

Abner Mares stepped up in weight to take on WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon in the featured undercard bout of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero card. The fight was hyped by many as having the potential to be fight of the night and a possible fight of the year contender.
