Mares stops Ponce De Leon in 9th round to win piece of featherweight title

LAS VEGAS - Abner Mares moved up in weight and didn't miss a beat, stopping Daniel Ponce De Leon in the ninth round Saturday night to win a piece of the featherweight title.

Man in the Middle

It’s not unusual for two fighters from the same promotional entity to compete in the ring. In fact, with the state of the business nowadays, it’s the easiest way to make a fight. Most of the major firms, whether they be Golden Boy Promotions, Top Rank, Don King Productions or Main Events, have all made a multitude of in-house match-ups pitting their clients against each other. It’s happening this weekend when WBC featherweight titlist Daniel Ponce de Leon defends his belt versus Abner Mares this Saturday night as the featured support bout on the “May Day: Floyd Mayweather vs. Robert Guerrero” pay-per-view card. Both fight under the Golden Boy banner.

What makes this match-up unusual is they are also both managed by one Frank Espinoza.

Frank Espinoza faces difficult situation with two top-tier clients fighting each other Saturday

Frank Espinoza is not one of those guys who's going to make anyone's most powerful list. He doesn't seek attention, nor does he expect any.

Mares Stops Ponce De Leon in Nine, Wins WBC Title

MGM Grand, Las Vegas - Abner Mares (26-0, 14KOs) became a three division world champion with a ninth round stoppage of Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-5, 35KOs) to capture the WBC featherweight championship. Ponce was down twice in the fight.

Ponce De Leon vs. Mares ready for war

While every boxing fan, media, and insider is pumped up about the May 4 Mayweather vs. Guerrero fight, the co-feature between WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce de Leon (44-4, 35 KOs) and unbeaten former super bantamweight champion Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13 KOs) could steal the show. However for longtime Southern California boxing manager Frank Espinoza this may be the toughest fight he has ever had to watch. Espinoza manages the career of both fighters.
