Stadium to Host Top Rank Boxing

Top Rank Boxing, the City of Laredo and the Lemurs offically announced the next big event comint to Uni-Trade Stadium this morning. Hall of Fame boxing promoter Bob Arum will host a seven-bout event at the Stadium on Saturday night May 11th. This will be the first boxing event to be held there.

Home Depot Center, Carson, California - Talented prospect Oscar Valdez stopped late replacement Carlos Gonzalez in the fourth round of a scheduled six round bout. Gonzalez (1-3) was a replacement for Jose Morales, who weighed nine pounds above the contract weight of 128 pounds. He hung in there with the 2008 and 2012 Olympian from Mexico, landing an occasional left hook. However, Valdez (4-0, 3 KOs) landed the more telling blows throughout the fight, although he got a little reckless in trading with Gonzalez in the third round. In the fourth, Valdez stunned Gonzalez with a punch and followed up with a barrage of punches. Gonzalez tried to cover up with his back against the ropes, but referee Tony Crebs decided to step in and save him from further punishment at 58 seconds.

Manager Frank Espinoza expects a "Fight of The Year" candidate on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, when Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35KOs) defends his WBC featherweight championship against Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13KOs). Ponce will make the first defense of the title he captured last September from Jhonny Gonzalez, while Mares will move up in pursuit of his third divisional crown.
